We fill in the author, title, date and publisher for you — check them before adding.
Your citation
In-text citation
Cite any source in seconds
The citation generator turns a link, a DOI, an ISBN or just a title into a ready citation. It finds the author, title, date, publisher and page numbers in open library catalogues and on the page itself, and formats them in the style your teacher asks for: APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago, Harvard or the Brazilian ABNT.
How to create a citation
- Choose the citation style at the top.
- Paste a link to a web page, a DOI of an article, an ISBN of a book or the title, and press Cite.
- Check the fields: if something is missing, type it in — the citation is rebuilt as you type.
- Press Add to reference list. Collect all your sources, then copy the list or download it as a Word file.
What you can cite
Websites, books, journal articles, book chapters, newspaper and magazine articles, YouTube videos and theses. For each type the generator asks only for the fields that the style needs.
In-text citations and footnotes
Under every citation you get the matching in-text citation: (Smith, 2020) for APA and Harvard, (Smith 45) for MLA, a footnote for Chicago and (Silva, 2020) for ABNT.
One list, any style
Your reference list is sorted alphabetically and saved in your browser, so it is still there when you come back. Switch the style and the whole list is reformatted at once — handy when a journal or a teacher asks for a different format.
Example in four styles
- APA 7: Brown, L. M., & Green, R. T. (2021). Cognitive load and learning. Journal of Educational Psychology, 113(2), 200–215.
- MLA 9: Brown, Laura M., and Robert T. Green. “Cognitive Load and Learning.” Journal of Educational Psychology, vol. 113, no. 2, 2021, pp. 200-15.
- Chicago: Brown, Laura M., and Robert T. Green. “Cognitive Load and Learning.” Journal of Educational Psychology 113, no. 2 (2021): 200–215.
- Harvard: Brown, L.M. and Green, R.T. (2021) ‘Cognitive load and learning’, Journal of Educational Psychology, 113(2), pp. 200–215.
Formatting rules for each style are on the pages APA citation generator, MLA citation generator, Chicago citation generator and ABNT reference generator.
