APA 7 Citation Style – Formatting Guidelines
The APA (American Psychological Association) citation style is commonly used in the social sciences. Below are the key formatting rules for references according to the 7th edition of the APA Publication Manual.
General Rules
- Use a hanging indent: the first line of each reference is flush left, and subsequent lines are indented by 0.5 inches.
- Double-space all entries in the reference list.
- Alphabetize the reference list by the last name of the first author of each work.
- Use italics for titles of books and journals.
- Use sentence case for article/book/chapter titles (capitalize only the first word and proper nouns).

Additional Notes
- If there is no author, start the citation with the title.
- Use “n.d.” for “no date” if the publication year is unknown.
- DOIs should be presented as URLs (e.g., https://textadviser.com/...).
- For sources with more than 20 authors, list the first 19, then an ellipsis (...), and the final author's name.
