Chicago style citations: bibliography and footnotes

The Chicago citation generator follows the notes and bibliography system of the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, used in history, the arts and the humanities. For every source you get a bibliography entry and the matching footnote. Turabian, the student version of Chicago, uses the same formats.

Footnotes

A footnote gives the author’s name in normal order and separates the elements with commas; the place and publisher of a book go in parentheses:

1. John A. Smith, Psychology and Modern Life, 2nd ed. (New York: Pearson, 2020), 54.

1. Laura M. Brown and Robert T. Green, “Cognitive Load and Learning,” Journal of Educational Psychology 113, no. 2 (2021): 205.

Add the page you cite at the end of the note. After the first note, a shortened note is enough: Smith, Psychology and Modern Life, 60.

Formatting the bibliography

  • The heading “Bibliography” is centered.
  • Entries are single-spaced with a blank line between them and a 0.5-inch hanging indent, in alphabetical order.
  • Up to ten authors are listed; with more, the first seven are followed by “et al.”

For other styles use the APA citation generator or the MLA citation generator — or switch the style at the top.
